When a patient who suffers from difficulty with receptive and expressive language is taken to a place of such foreboding, it isn’t difficult to imagine the anxiety and agitation that will inevitably accompany that fateful trip. Often, the child has been prodded and ‘stuck’ many times, been placed in rooms with strangers, too much light, unusual noises and odors that make even the most neuro-typical adult tremble in anticipation of the too familiar or the unknown.

My biggest concerns are the overuse of antibiotics, and when pediatricians give vaccinations while a child is sick, even if the child had negative reactions to previous vaccinations, give extra ‘shots’ to make up the schedule, or do not take other comorbidities (such as diarrhea, asthma or eczema) into account. This is one area where we might see a reduction – if the experts would just listen to the parents.
